In the year 327 AD, Elena, the mother of Byzantine Emperor Constantine, stopped in Konya on her pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she witnessed the early Christians of that era attempting to build their first churches and create frescoes. Supporting their efforts, Elena decided to donate a church to the Christians and participated in the laying of the church’s foundation stone.
